Iridology Consultation

Annie Sawyer, Ph.D.

Iridology is our unique body map and it involves the examination of the iris. Each iris is completely unique and it provides the genetic blueprint to our body. People are able to acquire inherited physical weaknesses, which may have affected previous family members that can be detected through Iridology. Iridology can also act as an extremely useful early warning system. It can alert a person who may have predisposition for developing certain diseases and conditions, but doesn't necessarily mean that he will develop them at all. However, Iridology can be used preventatively in the above-cited circumstances.

The main goal of this consultation is to make an analysis of the Iris evaluation in order to determine general characteristics, while helping the client to improve his health, enabling him to enjoy a happier, healthier life. My goal is to analyze which conditions have the potential to develop, in his case, if he neglects his diet, lifestyle, the exchange of rest with active work, how he handles stress, what can reflect to his health.

Our consultation started with the preamble, that the above Iris evaluation would take an hour and that my task is not to identify, or to diagnose any specific problems of my client’s health. By examining the eye, I would be able to determine a person’s overall state of health and well being, but I would not be able to diagnose or to predict any of his future diseases. I always begin taking an iris diagnosis, while carrying out my client complete history, by asking questions related to my observations, in order to create a complete picture afterwards.

The above covers previous and present medical issues, family medical history, a dietary and life style history. During the Iris Evaluation, I always use a 10x magnifying glass, to carry out the analysis. By examining the eye, I would be able to assess my client’s current state of health, any inherited weaknesses he might have, assessing levels of toxicity, malnutrition or deficiency in his body. Due to his genetic makeover pattern the above picture will never change or might change slightly, during his lifetime, due to his genetics.

I asked my client who for privacy reasons would be called M.:

ND: “M…..can you please inform me about your health in general. Do you have any problems, correlated with your GI tract for example, and how is your heart working? Are you having any metabolic sluggishness at all?

Client: “I had a bypass surgery 5 years ago, and a reinforcement of the aorta, after dissection of it, that was performed 3 ½ years ago. I have to admit that I have always had dyspepsia, arteriosclerosis of all my major vessels (including the aorta) due to my bad diet but I have never had any metabolic problems.”

ND: “M… I cannot see a specific disease in the iris of your eyes. Iridology does not diagnose, but it is a preventive tool for analysis of the whole array of physical and emotional conditions that can eventually lead to a disease. As a beginner I would like to examine your irises for research purposes, as I am still learning. My idea is to correlate what I see with your symptoms and problems. According to the color of your iris you belong to the so-called Hematogenic Constitution. Your circulatory problems are the main culprit of the above constitution. People like you have the tendency to be extremely emotional, hard driven and I am sure you seldom or never give rest to your body and thoughts. My advice to you is to make a complete blood check up, please test your liver function with an enzyme panel, as well as your thyroid gland.

Client: Yes I am very emotional and have frequent anxiety attacks before going to work. I have been always very energetic, pretty studious, hard working person with a serious drive to succeed. In fact I have already done half of the above tests, in relation with my previous two major operations, but I will repeat them again. My thyroid seems to work pretty well, as all my tests seem to be in norm.

ND: According to his iris structure, his constitutional subtype can be described as Neurogenic Subtype. He is Deficient Neurogenic as both eyes have fewer layers of iris fibers with less density. The major difference of this structural subtype is the Robust Neurogenic, which has many layers of iris fibers with greater density than the Deficient Neurogenic subtype. His pupils were very small, one of the general characteristics of the Neurogenic Subtype.

I asked him if he is getting easily tired or exhausted, and if he ever experienced frequent, throbbing headaches. He had to agree about the frequent headaches. He admitted being a hard worker with a natural drive to succeed and with high emotional sensitivity, hidden behind the barrier of diligent behavior. He seldom rests, and is always working. My advice to him was to learn to say ‘No’, and this should be one of his main treatment programs in the years ahead. His frequent insomnia and vital brain should learn to rid the unpleasant thoughts.

His pupils were small with vertical ellipses and narrow collarets, without any flattenings. I advised my client to keep his blood pressure low and in check daily. There were no contraction furrows observed. I found 3 small crypts (very small closed lacunae) in his left eye. This directed me to the zone of adrenals/kidneys and the zone of prostate gland. He mentioned that his father was operated for prostate cancer 15 years ago, but he is still alive. His father, and both brothers, had bypass surgery, a thoracic aneurysm (in the case of his father), and the whole family suffers of high cholesterol, heart and digestive problems.

ND: My explanation to the above statement was that, with his genetic makeup, he should try to be more laid back in life, with frequent rest and vacations. The crypts may indicate bowel disturbances or long seated toxins in the above organs tissues. He had also few signs named Defect of Substance that indicate poor nutrition in the area of kidneys/adrenals and the pancreas. The color of his iris stroma was lightly gray, which signified enough vital force. I encouraged him that he could resolve his chronic problem, due to his perfect vital force (according to my iris examination), probably inherited from his parents (85 and 86 years old.) I was surprised that no Corneal Arcus was observed in both eyes of the client. By having generalized arteriosclerosis and high cholesterol in the past, he should be seen as an opaque circular arc all over the iris, but in the above case it was not seen.

My client’s answer was that he has been on anti-cholesterol drugs for years, and his values of LDL and total cholesterol seem to be pretty low. I reassured him that this is a good indicator of minimal chances for future heart problems, as well as fat metabolism issues of the liver, if he follows nutritional and lifestyle changes. He seemed to be very encouraged with the above statements.

My client represents typical Hematogenic Constitution (dark or true brown iris). There are not color subtypes known in relation to the above Hematogenic Constitution. According to his Hematogenic Constitution, he may have the predisposition to conditions that involve an imbalance of blood elements, blood circulation problems, or blood-making components. Often that constitution is unable to store essential minerals.

I found the iris examination relatively easy to perform yet quite challenging. Knowing that he had serious heart problems, I did not diagnose this (according to the Jensen Chart) and that was my only concern, therefore telling me that the surgical procedure was so well done, that there are any not signs in the iris of both eyes. As each body is unique, every person should have different dietary and life style requirements. We finished our consultation with nutritional and life style advices cited already above.
