Cold and Numb feet
Greg Sawyer, D. C.
Causes of Cold feet:
- Cold weather
- Burger disease
- Reynaud Phenomenon
- Hypothyroidism or Low Thyroid (Hashimoto) disease
- Leg circulation disorders
- Multiple drug use- substances or toxins may possibly cause cold feet as a side effect.
Cold Feet and Back numbness:
The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Back Numbness. There are likely to be other possible causes, so ask your doctor about your symptoms.
- Diabetes
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Peripheral nerve trauma
- Peripheral nerve compression
- Sciatica
- Cold weather
- Cerebrovascular incident
- Back Injury
Numbness can be caused by anything that upsets the nerve cell's delicate chemistry.
- Long-standing diabetes is the most common cause of foot numbness.
- In some cases, the numbness is probably a result of bypass surgery, the long straight veins in the legs are removed to use as new blood vessels for the heart. Sometimes the cut nerves do not completely heal.
- Another explanation of the numbness may be a small stroke during or after surgery; a stroke may result in permanent damage to the brain cells that sense touch in your leg. Usually, blood clots in the veins of the legs do not cause numbness, although they may cause swelling, discomfort and skin changes. Also, blockages in the arteries of your legs usually do not cause numbness but can certainly lead to leg pain, just like blockages in the arteries to the heart can lead to chest pain.
- Raynaud's disease is a condition that causes some areas of your body — such as your fingers, toes, and tip of your nose and ears — to feel numb and cool in response to cold temperatures or stress. It's a disorder of the blood vessels that supply blood to your skin. During a Raynaud's attack, these arteries narrow, limiting blood circulation to affected areas.
- Vitamin & Mineral deficiencies- for example Magnesium deficiencies.
- Liver or kidney disease.
- Cancer
- Lyme disease
- Multiple drugs use.
Risk factors for Raynaud’s disease
- Smoking
- Chronic Alcoholism
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure- Beta-blockers, ergotamin, and other HBP medications can be the reason of Raynaud disease
- Diabetes
- Cigarette smoking - Aggravates Raynaud's phenomenon and is a major risk factor for peripheral vascular disease and Buerger's disease
- Occupational history - vibrating machinery workers are at risk of Raynaud's phenomenon
- Past medical history - possible causes of Raynaud's phenomenon include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, polyarteritis nodosa, Buerger's disease, Polycythaemia vera, Leukemia, Polymyositis, and Dermatomyositis
