How to Address Arrhythmia the Holistic Way?

Annie Sawyer, PhD

Arrhythmia is a functional or organic disorder of the regular rhythmic beating of the heart. They're million of Americans living nowadays with arrhythmias. Arrhythmias can occur in a completely healthy heart and be of minimal consequence, but they may also indicate a serious problem (heart disease, stroke or sudden death from heart disease). It is already proven that most of the arrhythmias are due or a consequence of a mineral imbalance, anemia, hormonal disbalance or thyroid problems (hyper or hypothyroidism).

Researchers found that balancing CA/MG ratio is extremely important to balance heart rhythm. Of course in case of thyroid problems, balancing only calcium and magnesium won't correct arrhythmia. One will need to correct also most of the minerals as for example: copper, zinc, iron, selenium, chromium, manganese, etc. Calcium and magnesium get easily out of balance due to aging, metabolic syndrome, obesity, cancer, Grave's disease or any other degenerative and chronic disease. In fact arrhythmia represents itself as a result of a nutritional problem (deficiency).

However, getting CA/MG ratio corrected will be essential if not a major issue for normalizing the heart rate. Irregular heart rate can be a sign of either too little calcium or too little magnesium or their poor absorption. In summary, to balance calcium and magnesium a normal person may need a CA/MG ratio of about 2:1. While a person with hyperthyroid status will need more magnesium, a hypothyroid person will need more calcium, but these ratios need to be constantly adjusted as one approaches normal levels. People with obesity and metabolic syndrome will need prevalence in the ratio of magnesium.

Research proved that vitamin B family is extremely important in preventing irregular heart rate. If vit B gets deficient, it seems to have an effect on the calcium/magnesium balance ratio. Thus vit B deficiency has similar effects to a calcium and magnesium deficiency. After years of practicing in both ail of the medicine, I now realize that it's important when supplementing B complex vitamins (mainly in the morning) -- to always make sure that you are taking vit B50 or vit B100 well balanced B formula. For example, if you are supplementing with high amounts of niacin (B3), be aware that you will need to incorporate vit (B5) to the same amount to prevent a disturbance of the Cal/Mag ratio which could result in irregular heart beat rate. That is why is always better to take vit B complex that is either in its B50mg or B100mg balanced form.

Scientific evidence indicates that the mineral magnesium can help to manage sress and to help the irregular heart rhythms.  Fish oil and coenzyme Q10 might also be useful.  Coenzyme Q 10 combined with Alpha Lipoic Acid and N-acetyl L-carnitine are necessary to reassure enough energy for the heart. As proven in several trials-taken together they work in a synergism and provide your body with the antioxidant effects as well. However these natural substances should be used in conjunction with conventional medications as the evidence is not convincing that they can replace routine medical treatments
